    Apple Cinnamon Compote

    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This Apple Cinnamon Compote is so delicious on so many things from breakfast to dessert! It is the perfect accompaniment to pork, pancakes, waffles, toast, yogurt, ice cream or right out of the jar with a big ole spoon! It is the perfect amount of sweet with a touch of savory and so quick and easy to make. It is so yummy with some yogurt and my Cinnamon Granola!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

It is sweet with zero refined sugars: The apple cinnamon fruit spread adds the perfect amount of sweetness without any added refined sugars.

Perfect with pork: You know the old saying "pork chops and applesauce" well this Apple Cinnamon Compote is an elegant way to serve apples having so much flavor and texture that elevates any pork whether its a roasted pork loin, seared pork steak or pork chops.

Minimal ingredients: Having only 5 ingredients plus a few spices and comes together quickly.

    Ingredients You Will Need

Granny Smith Apples: Granny Smith apples have a light green skin and are firm and juicy. The have a tart, acidic like flavor and my apple of choice for this recipe as they do not brown quickly once cut.

Shallot: Shallots are a type of onion that are a member of the allium family. Closely related to garlic, chives and onions. Having a mild, savory flavor with garlic undertones.

Ghee: Incorporating ghee into this sauce adds a rich, nutty flavor. Ghee is clarified - meaning impurities have been removed, resulting in a pure and clear form of butterfat with lower lactose content than butter.

Lemon: Lemon juice adds a fresh, bright, and tangy element, which can help balance the richness of the other ingredients.

Apple Cinnamon Fruit Spread: My favorite is St. Dalfour but any sugar free apple spread or jam will work.

Ground Ginger: Ground ginger adds a warm and aromatic flavor, enhancing the overall taste profile of the dish.

Ground Nutmeg: Ground nutmeg adds a distinctive warm, sweet-spicy flavor.

Ground Allspice: Ground allspice adds a depth of flavor to so many dishes and it has a savory-sweet flavor.

Salt: Elevates the overall flavor of any dish. Always salt in moderation in accordance with your dietary preferences.

    Instructions

Prepare your apples: Peel, core and dice your apples as uniformly as possible.

Dice the shallot: Peel and dice the shallot finely.

Prepare the lemon: Juice the lemon being sure to remove any pits that may fall into the bowl while juicing.

Prepare the skillet: Melt your ghee in a large skillet.

Cook the shallot: Add the shallot and cook about 2 minutes.

Add remaining ingredients: Add the apples, lemon juice, fruit spread and spice and stir to combine.

Cook the compote: Cook over medium low heat until apples soften. About 10 minutes but watch closely so as not to overcook them.

    Enjoy!

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

Make this ahead: This Apple Cinnamon Compote gets even better the next day so go ahead and make it a day or two ahead of time. I like to warm it before serving but it is also delicious room temperature or cold right from the refrigerator!

Double the recipe: When I tell you this is so good on all things I am not kidding! You will love having extra for Sunday morning pancakes or waffles or any day of the week for a quick topping with some granola on yogurt!

    Recipe Variations

Can’t find Apple Cinnamon Spread: You can use any apple jam and add some cinnamon to the recipe or you could even use a peach spread. Be sure it is unsweetened to keep this recipe Paleo and Whole30 friendly.

Add raisins or nuts: Adding raisins or nuts is especially delicious when you plan to use this compote on yogurt or as a topping for pancakes, waffles or even vanilla ice cream!

    Storage Tips

This Cinnamon Apple Compote can be stored in the fridge for 7-10 days when placed in a sealed airtight glass container, like a ball jar.

    FAQs About Cinnamon Apple Compote

Is apple compote the same as apple sauce?

No! Apple sauce and apple compote are two different dishes. Both the shape and texture of the apples are retained in a compote with no additional water being added whereas applesauce are usually cooked down with water and then pureed.

Will my compote thicken as it cools?

Yes, this apple cinnamon compote will thicken a bit as it cools.

What is the purpose of a compote?

Typically, a compote is used to complement a particular dish, such as meat or as a topping for breakfast fare such as pancakes, waffles or yougurt.

I made this today to put on pork tenderloin tonight. I tried a spoonful and had to put it in the back of the fridge so I wouldn’t eat it all. This is so delicious and your home will smell amazing when you make it!! I can’t wait to eat more tonight! This is a hit ♥️🔥🙌
